Writing
Our writing instruction is based on the Lucy Calkins Writers Workshop.
The Writers Workshop looks at writing as a process from drafting, through conferencing and editing, to publishing. One focus of our writers workshop is taking the time to come up with good ideas. Rather than choosing a topic and writing about it, we take the time to come up with a few good ideas. Then, in a quick initial draft, we sketch out a couple of these ideas to assess which we can turn into a polished piece that we can truly be proud of.
In the initial phase of writing, students are focused on getting their ideas down on paper rather than worrying about how to spell a word or whether to use a comma or a period. As we reach the editing phases of the writing process, we look back at our writing and tackle conventions (grammar, usage, mechanics, and spelling).
